LOS ANGELES (AP) Paris Hilton has rehired the publicist she dumped over
the weekend after being sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Elliot Mintz confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that he is
again representing the 26-year-old socialite, who was ordered to report
to county jail by June 5 for violating the terms of her probation in an
alcohol-related reckless driving case.
Mintz, 62, wouldn't elaborate on why he reunited with Hilton. The
publicist, whose clients have included John Lennon and Bob Dylan, issued
a statement Sunday night that he and Hilton had parted ways over an
apparent "misunderstanding she received from me regarding the terms of
her probation."
In a court appearance Friday, Hilton told the judge Mintz informed her
it was all right to drive on a suspended license for work obligations.
Mintz also testified Hilton believed she was allowed to drive. The judge
called Mintz's testimony worthless.
Hilton - star of reality TV show "The Simple Life" on the E! network -
has parlayed her party lifestyle into worldwide fame.
She has called the sentence unfair, and her fans have posted a petition
on the Internet urging Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon her.
"I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel
and unwarranted and I don't deserve this," Hilton told photographers
assembled outside her home Saturday.
Ms Hilton told the judge she was very sorry and that she would “pay complete
attention to everything” from now on.
The socialite said she did not know her licence had been suspended when caught
driving without headlights in February.
According to papers filed in Los Angeles’ Superior Court, Ms Hilton was stopped
by California Highway Patrol officers on 15 January and informed she was driving
on a suspended license.
The 26-year-old then reportedly signed a document acknowledging she was not
allowed to drive.
I’m very sorry and from now on I’m going to pay complete attention to everything
On 27 February, she was stopped by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for
speeding on Sunset Boulevard with her car’s headlights off and charged with
violating her probation.
Although Ms Hilton maintained she was not aware her license had been suspended,
court papers said the document she signed in January was found in her car’s
glove compartment.
She was also accused of failing to enroll in an alcohol education programmed by a
court-ordered deadline.

Hours after strolling the red carpet in a strapless black dress, Paris Hilton
traded her designer duds for a jail-issued jumpsuit.
The 26-year-old heiress checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility in
Lynwood just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She's expected to serve three-weeks for
violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.
Hilton surrendered to sheriff's deputies after making a surprise visit to the
MTV Movie Awards in the afternoon.
"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters on the red carpet. "I'm
ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my
family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful."
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton was easy to work with.
"Her demeanor was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative," he said.
Hilton turned herself in at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles just
after 10:30 p.m., then was escorted to the all women's facility in Lynwood,
where she was booked, fingerprinted and issued a jail uniform, Whitmore said.
She also was given her first meal: cereal, bread and juice.
So far, Hilton does not have a cellmate, Whitmore said.
The "Simple Life" star will be housed in the "special needs" unit of the
13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12
two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and
other high-profile inmates.
Like other inmates in that unit, Hilton will take her meals in her cell and will
be allowed outside the 12-foot-by-8-foot space for at least an hour each day to
shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on
the telephone. No cell phones or BlackBerrys are permitted in the facility, even
for visitors.
The jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath a
bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006. It's located
in an industrial area about five miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
"I did have a choice to go to a pay jail," Hilton said Sunday, without giving
details. "But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that
I'm not and that's why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and
I'm going to be treated like everyone else. I'm going to do the time, I'm going
to do it the right way."
When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that
she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative
jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.
Sometimes stars are allowed to do their time in a jail of their choosing. In
such cases they pay a daily room-and-board fee to the smaller jails, which
afford them more privacy and comfort.
Cop-slapping actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, for example, served three days behind bars
in 1990 at the El Segundo jail near the Los Angeles International Airport. She
paid $85 a day.
On Saturday, about 15 photographers, reporters and television crews staked out
the entrances to the jail waiting for the celebutante's arrival. Authorities had
also cordoned off a grassy area outside the facility for the media. She had
until Tuesday to report.
On Sunday, about a dozen photographers and television crews were at the Lynwood
facility when she arrived in an unmarked SUV. Video captured by celebrity news
site TMZ.com showed Hilton inside the vehicle with her mother, Kathy.
Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, said he spoke with Kathy Hilton after she
returned from the jail.
"She told me it was very emotional," Mintz said. "She also said that she feels
this will be a time when Paris will be able to think and reflect and to spend
time alone to learn from the experience because in Paris' life she's never alone
- there's always a constant chatter around her."
Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no
contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months'
probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed
Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document
acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by sheriff's
deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with violating her probation.
Associated Press Writer Peter Prengaman contributed to this report.

Paris Hilton 'doing very well' in jail
RTE The Simple Life' star Paris Hilton is reportedly "doing
very well" since entering jail to begin her 23 day sentence on Sunday.
Hilton's lawyer told reporters outside the jail yesterday that she is "using
this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world
better".
Attorney Richard A Hutton said: "Her attitude is: 'I'm going to come in here,
I'm going to do my time, get it over with, and I'm going to show the world who I
really am'."
"This is unjust, unfair, and she really is, unfortunately, a victim of a system
that we pride so much on being fair. But for Paris Hilton it is not," he said.
Hutton said that Hilton had been segregated from the general population of the
prison for safety reasons.
"Because of who she is, they had no choice - and believe me, we are more
interested in her safety more than anything else - but they had no choice but to
place her in administrative segregation."
Hilton reported to jail late on Sunday after attending the MTV Movie Awards at
the weekend.

Hilton gets 45 days Heiress enters prison hours after MTV bash
Jun 05, 2007 04:30 AM
LOS ANGELES–From camera flashes on the red carpet of a Hollywood awards show to
the walls of a jail cell.
That's Paris Hilton.
The 26-year-old heiress, a symbol of privilege and celebrity culture, arrived
early yesterday for booking into a Los Angeles County jail, a day ahead of her
court-ordered deadline, to serve three weeks for violating probation in an
alcohol-related reckless driving case.
She surrendered herself in downtown Los Angeles hours after surprising fans at
the MTV Movie Awards in a strapless black dress. She was transferred to the
nearby Century Regional Detention Facility for women, where she was
fingerprinted, photographed, and issued an ID wristband, orange jail clothing
and toiletries.
A sheriff's spokesperson said Hilton was "calm" and "focused" during booking.
After a visit yesterday, her lawyer said Hilton will use her jail time to decide
how she can "make the world a better place."

Hilton's lawyer, Richard Hutton, said the jailbird heiress is being held
in solitary confinement, and added that she is effectively a prisoner of
her own celebrity.
He made the claim in an address to the media yesterday outside the
Century Regional Detention Facility, where she is being held.
"I met with Paris this morning. She is doing very well under the
circumstances. The staff here inform us she has been gracious, polite,
and thankful for their help with her," he told the assembled
journalists.
"We came in last night, early, rather than being a public spectacle this
morning. That was Paris's request, to demonstrate that she takes this
very seriously. She did not want to make a media circus out of this
event but rather surrender quietly and start doing her time," he added.

Celebrity justice cuts
both ways for Paris Hilton
By Sharon Waxman Published: June 9, 2007
LOS ANGELES: The national obsession with celebrity collided head-on with
the more serious issue of the equal application of justice on Friday, as
a judge sent the socialite Paris Hilton back to jail some 36 hours after
she was released for an unspecified medical problem.
Judge Michael Sauer ordered Hilton to serve the rest of her sentence in
a county lockup after the city attorney, whose office had prosecuted
her, filed a petition asking that the sheriff's department be held in
contempt or explain why it had released her with an ankle monitor on
Thursday, after she had served just five days.
Hilton had been sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating the terms of
her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. With time off
for good behavior, she had been expected to serve 23 days.
Hilton, 26, wearing no makeup and with her hair disheveled, sobbed and
screamed, "Mom, this isn't right," as she was taken from the packed
courtroom by deputies.
It was a rare moment in this star-filled city, where badly behaving
celebrities can seemingly get away with anything — or at least DUI But
Hilton, for all her money and celebrity, seems to have been caught
between battling arms of the justice system here, with prosecutors and
Judge Sauer determined to make a point by incarcerating her, only to
have the sheriff's office let her go.

Paris Hilton's new home on South Alameda Street (the Century Regional
Detention Facility) has 2,200 inmates and stands under a freeway and
next to a railroad track in Lynwood, 12 miles southeast of downtown Los
Angeles.
Rooms at the Hilton Paris have minibars, hairdryers in their bathrooms,
electronic door locks with keycards and remote control TVs with cable.
About half have balconies. Pets are allowed.
The Paris Hilton cell has two bunks, a table, a sink, a toilet and a
small window. Its occupant can leave for about an hour a day to watch TV
in a day room, talk on the telephone, exercise outside or shower. No
pets.
The Hilton Paris features a newsstand where one might read of a
26-year-old miscreant hotel heiress who began incarceration June 3
following a 45-day sentence for a probation violation following a
reckless driving conviction. The place in Lynwood has no newsstand.
The Hilton Paris, one former guest wrote on the Internet, is a "great
location and excellent value" with a courteous and helpful concierge.
The Paris Hilton place, one former inmate told the Associated Press, "is
hell." And dirty, said another. Also, said yet another, the guards are
always screaming at inmates.

Paris Hilton sees brighter light
Peta Hellard

PARIS Hilton believes her jail sentence was a message from God to change
her party-loving lifestyle and become a positive role model for people who
look up to her.
In her first interview since she was dramatically sent back to jail on the
weekend, Hilton said her imprisonment had been a life-changing wake-up
call.
"I used to act dumb -- it was an act," she said.
"I am 26 years old and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor
do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me. God
has given me this new chance."
Hilton made the comments during a phone conversation with veteran US
television reporter Barbara Walters in a call from the hospital of the Los
Angeles jail where The Simple Life star is being held.
When asked what happened in the jail that led to her being reassigned to
serve her sentence at her Hollywood Hills home, the heiress said she had
not been wailing, sobbing or screaming as had been widely reported.
"But I was not eating or sleeping," Hilton said.
"I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage. It was a
horrible experience."
