There used to be such strict protocol about dressing for the office. Neat
suits or conservative skirts-and-shirts, pumps at all times and
understated accessories were the order of the day if you wanted to get
ahead. Though lots of women still have to dress that way when they're on
the job, there are many more women at the opposite end of the spectrum,
working in environments where it's OK to dress like it's Casual Friday,
every day.
Getting the green light to be comfortable and relaxed in your clothing at
work is great. (Especially if you've ever been expected to wear pantyhose
when it's a 100 degree New York City summer day.) But it raises some
challenges. How casual is too casual if you still want to dress for
success? If most of your time is spent at the computer, then what does it
matter if you're wearing flip-flops? It comes down to common sense.
Wear more relaxed shapes. A casual environment means you can cut out the
tailored pieces and go for softer slacks, sweaters, long-sleeve T-shirts
and cardigans. Just don't do them in "weekend fabrics" like thin cotton,
sweatshirt material, velour, or anything too high-tech/athletic. It's the
fabric, not the shape, that will yell "too casual!" and convey an overly
laid-back, Sunday-afternoon spirit. Note: Linen is a relaxed weekend
fabric that can work for the office as long as it's pressed and fresh
looking, not crinkly and beach-blown.
