LOS ANGELES -- Troubled pop star Britney Spears finally arrived at a Los
Angeles court on Monday for a crucial hearing in her bitter custody battle
with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Spears had been expected to attend from the start of a 9:30 am (1730 GMT)
closed hearing where her lawyers were expected to argue for the
restoration of the singer's visitation rights concerning her two baby
sons.
However, the 26-year-old failed to show as the hearing got underway and
only arrived several hours later at around 1:00 pm (2100 GMT), followed by
a convoy of paparazzi vehicles, television pictures showed.
Britney Spears News
The hearing is over.
Britney Spears has left the courtroom, escorted by her attorneys and
several Sheriff's deputies. Britney's visitation has been extended over
the weekend, and the judge took the bigger custody issue under submission.
K-Fed's attorney spoke to reporters after the hearing, and told the group
that the court will issue a written ruling sometime Monday or Tuesday.

Pitt and Angelina Jolie, stars of the 2005 hit
``Mr. and Mrs. Smith,'' have been the quarry of celebrity photographers
and the object of incessant tabloid gossip since they hooked up amid the
breakup of Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston. A media vigil preceded the
birth of their daughter in Namibia last year, and crowds swelled during
the Toronto festival everywhere they went.
In the late 1800s, James was able to move
anonymously through America under a series of aliases, but his notoriety
was unparalleled. James' image as a Robin Hood-style bandit of the people
_ a myth he helped perpetuate himself _ had made him a folk hero to the
public and a demon to the railroads.
Based on Ron Hansen's novel, ``Assassination of
Jesse James'' dissects the James myth to present a charismatic man in the
last year of his life, as his sense of security crumbles and he is
overwhelmed by paranoia that associates are selling him out to the law.
Into James' inner circle comes young idolator
Ford (Casey Affleck), who has grown up on romanticized stories of the
outlaw's deeds. Initially an intimate, Ford later becomes an object of
scorn for Pitt's increasingly unpredictable James.
Ford eventually feels compelled to become James'
executioner, coming to believe it's almost a civic duty.
``I don't know what led to his idea, the need to
destroy the very thing that he worshipped, but that's certainly what's
going on here. You have a demoralized boy, a boy who's subject to
humiliation, and in his quiet hours has this lust for the Jesse James
celebrity, the Jesse James phenomenon,'' said Pitt, 43.
``Then at the point where he meets Jesse James,
meets his idol, and his idol spurns him, it becomes that thing, needing to
destroy the thing you love to become equal with it again.''
At two hours, 40 minutes, ``Assassination of
Jesse James,'' which opens Friday, is a challenging tale, yet one that has
drawn praise for the lyrical melancholy of its 19th century landscapes and
for the key performances. The film earned the best-actor prize at the
Venice Film Festival for Pitt, a previous supporting-actor Academy Awards
nominee for ``Twelve Monkeys'' who could be in contention for a lead-actor
Oscar this time.
The celebrity mystique that surrounds Pitt meshed
well with the mythic nature of James, said Andrew Dominik, director of
``Assassination of Jesse James.''
``It was the sort of part that you could cast a
movie star in and it would make sense,'' Dominik said. ``It wouldn't be
miscasting Brad, who you never really feel like you know on-screen. He's
always retained kind of an essential mystery. He's not a person people
really identify with. He's more of an object to them. They aspire to be
him, but they don't really identify with him.
``Those were really good qualities for Jesse.
They're both enigmatic and charismatic.''

Leaving 'The View' Early
O'Donnell won't return to The View
Following her dramatic on-air argument with cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck
earlier this week on the ABC talk show, O'Donnell has decided to leave
The View effective immediately — three weeks earlier than was initially
planned. Said ABC Daytime president Brian Frons in a statement: ''We had
hoped that Rosie would be with us until the end of her contract three
weeks from now, but Rosie has informed us that she would like an early
leave. Therefore, we part ways, thank her for her tremendous
contribution to The View and wish her well.'' Of her time on the show,
said O'Donnell in a statement, ''I'm extremely grateful. It's been an
amazing year and I love all three women.'' Barbara Walters said she and
O'Donnell will remain friends off camera: ''I brought Rosie to the show.
Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at
The View. I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate
relationship will not change.''

Roberts starring, producing
Joan Root film
Julia Roberts will star in and produce a
movie, inspired by a Vanity Fair article, about wildlife conservationist
Joan Root for Working Titles Films. Root was murdered in her home in
Kenya earlier this year. David Magee (Finding Neverland) is writing the
screenplay. Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce with
Roberts through her production company, Red Om. The as-yet untitled
movie will follow Root's life making documentaries around the globe with
her husband, Alan. After their divorce, Root returned to Kenya where she
worked toward saving Lake Naivasha from the ecologically damaging flower
farm industry. She was subsequently shot and killed. Shooting is
scheduled to start early next year.

Hours after strolling the red carpet in a
strapless black dress, Paris Hilton traded her designer duds for a
jail-issued jumpsuit.
The 26-year-old heiress checked into the Century Regional Detention
Facility in Lynwood just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She's expected to
serve three-weeks for violating her probation in an alcohol-related
reckless driving case.
Hilton surrendered to sheriff's deputies after making a surprise visit
to the MTV Movie Awards in the afternoon.
"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters on the red
carpet. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really
hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and
that's really helpful."
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton was easy to work with.
"Her demeanor was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative," he
said.
Hilton turned herself in at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los
Angeles just after 10:30 p.m., then was escorted to the all women's
facility in Lynwood, where she was booked, fingerprinted and issued a
jail uniform, Whitmore said.
She also was given her first meal: cereal, bread and juice.
So far, Hilton does not have a cellmate, Whitmore said.
The "Simple Life" star will be housed in the "special needs" unit of the
13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit
contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public
officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates.
Like other inmates in that unit, Hilton will take her meals in her cell
and will be allowed outside the 12-foot-by-8-foot space for at least an
hour each day to shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in
outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone. No cell phones or
BlackBerrys are permitted in the facility, even for visitors.
The jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath
a bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006.
It's located in an industrial area about five miles southeast of
downtown Los Angeles.
"I did have a choice to go to a pay jail," Hilton said Sunday, without
giving details. "But I declined because I feel like the media portrays
me in a way that I'm not and that's why I wanted to go to county, to
show that I can do it and I'm going to be treated like everyone else.
I'm going to do the time, I'm going to do it the right way."
When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer
ruled that she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use
of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.
Sometimes stars are allowed to do their time in a jail of their
choosing. In such cases they pay a daily room-and-board fee to the
smaller jails, which afford them more privacy and comfort.
Cop-slapping actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, for example, served three days
behind bars in 1990 at the El Segundo jail near the Los Angeles
International Airport. She paid $85 a day.
On Saturday, about 15 photographers, reporters and television crews
staked out the entrances to the jail waiting for the celebutante's
arrival. Authorities had also cordoned off a grassy area outside the
facility for the media. She had until Tuesday to report.
On Sunday, about a dozen photographers and television crews were at the
Lynwood facility when she arrived in an unmarked SUV. Video captured by
celebrity news site TMZ.com showed Hilton inside the vehicle with her
mother, Kathy.
Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, said he spoke with Kathy Hilton after
she returned from the jail.
"She told me it was very emotional," Mintz said. "She also said that she
feels this will be a time when Paris will be able to think and reflect
and to spend time alone to learn from the experience because in Paris'
life she's never alone - there's always a constant chatter around her."
Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she
pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to
36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers
informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a
document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by
sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with
violating her probation.
